Frequently Asked Questions & Policies

 FAQs

  • The lymphatic system is a crucial part of your body's circulatory and immune systems. It's a network of vessels and lymph nodes that collect fluid, proteins, and cell debris from between your cells and transport it back to your heart. Your lymph nodes filter this fluid and act as immune system check points, fighting off any bacteria or virus. This system maintains fluid balance in your body - without it, fluid builds up in your tissues with no way to get out, leading to excess swelling.

Unlike your cardiovascular system which has the heart to pump blood, your lymphatic system relies on muscle movement, breathing, and external stimulation to move lymph fluid. When this system becomes overwhelmed or compromised - such as after surgery, injury, or due to certain medical conditions - fluid can accumulate, causing swelling, discomfort, and slower healing.

Think of your lymphatic system as your body's natural drainage and filtration system. When it's working well, you heal faster, fight infection better, and maintain healthy fluid balance throughout your tissues.

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (Vodder-technique) was developed by Dr. Emil and Estrid Vodder in 1836 as a specific technique to stimulate the lymphatic system to move lymph fluid to reduce swelling. The gentle strokes over your skin manually stretch lymphatic vessels, allowing for fluid to flow in from between your cells. This fluid is guided to your lymph nodes, which are also stimulated to take up this new lymph fluid, to filter, and process it. This manual technique stimulates what your body naturally does with fluid, just at an accelerated rate, which helps to overcome a sluggish or compromised system and decrease swelling. Think of it as clearing out the traffic ahead of you on the road so that you can make it out of the parking lot.

Moving swelling out of your body is crucial for maintaining tissue health. Stagnant fluid decreases your cells ability to access the fresh oxygen and nutrients from their blood supply needed to heal, and allows for bacterial or viral infection to more easily attack compromised tissues. Proteins can also build up in this fluid, leading to dense, fibrotic tissue. Stimulating your body to remove this fluid at a faster rate allows for a healthier environment for your cells to heal and be able to handle stressors.

Unlike traditional massage which uses firm pressure to work muscles and fascia, MLD uses very light, rhythmic movements along the skin's surface, with slightly deeper pressure over areas of lymph nodes. These gentle techniques follow the natural pathways of your lymphatic system, moving accumulated fluid from swollen areas toward lymph nodes. Deep breathing is also a key component of MLD to help stimulate the lymph system deep in your abdomen and elicit the parasympathetic nervous system (your rest and digest system), which allows for your lymphatic system to work more efficiently.

    MLD is particularly effective for:

    • Post-surgical recovery – Reducing swelling and bruising after cosmetic, orthopedic, or medical surgery

    • Lymphedema management – Treating chronic swelling caused by impaired lymphatic function

    • Autoimmune management – Reducing inflammation and supporting faster recovery from flare-ups

    • Wellness support – Promoting immune function and decreased inflammation

The technique I use is based on established protocols developed by lymphatic drainage specialists and is recognized by medical professionals as an effective therapeutic approach for these conditions.

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage is generally very safe and is one of the gentlest forms of therapeutic bodywork. However, there are some conditions where MLD should be avoided or modified.

MLD is typically safe and beneficial for:

    • Post-surgical recovery

    • Lymphedema (primary or secondary)

    • Sports injuries and athletic recovery

    • Chronic inflammation and autoimmune conditions

    • Sinus congestion/ allergies

    • Fibromyalgia

    • Lipedema

    • General wellness and immune support

You should NOT receive MLD if you have:

    • Active infection or fever – MLD could spread infection through your system

    • Congestive heart failure – Increased fluid movement can strain the heart

    • Blood clots (DVT) – Risk of clot movement

    • Acute kidney problems – Your kidneys may not be able to process additional fluid

    • Active cancer or untreated cancer – Discuss with your oncologist first (many cancer survivors receive MLD safely, but timing matters)

    Special considerations:

    • Pregnancy – Generally safe in second and third trimesters, but requires modified techniques

    • Thyroid conditions – Requires gentle approach around neck area

    • Low blood pressure – May feel lightheaded; we'll monitor and adjust

During your initial consultation, we'll review your health history to ensure MLD is appropriate for your situation. If you have any medical conditions, we'll discuss how to safely adapt the treatment to your needs.

When in doubt, please consult with your physician. I'm always happy to communicate with your healthcare team to ensure coordinated, safe care.

  • The number of sessions you'll need depends on your specific condition, goals, and how your body responds to treatment. Every person heals differently, so I'll work with you to create a personalized treatment plan.

For a relatively healthy system, I recommend coming in about once per month. This frequency helps stave off lymphatic congestion and maintain a lower level of inflammation throughout your body. It allows for your body to manage normal stressors more easily, often helping with symptoms related to allergies, menstrual cycle, arthritis, athletic recovery, etc. Increased frequency can be beneficial for someone actively undergoing a detox protocol or loosing a significant amount of weight.

For post-surgical recovery, I recommend coming in as soon as you and your surgeon are okay with. Often, the sooner the better, with one week post-op being a great place to start. This allows us to address acute post-op swelling, get ahead of fibrosis, and provide some relief to tender surgical sites. At your first visit, we will create a treatment plan based on your personal factors. Most clients benefit from MLD for up to 6 months post-op, with gradually decreasing frequency, in order to address any recurring swelling and manage scar tissue.

For Lymphedema management, I recommend starting with weekly sessions to assess how your body responds and gradually decreasing frequency until a good maintenance schedule is established. For a lot of clients, this ends up as once or twice monthly sessions. At your first visit, we will create a treatment plan based on your personal factors and goals. For many clients, we help them maintain a baseline after completing CDT treatment, or if they are maintaining a low level of lymphedema. For others, we help them get started with lymphatic treatment while they’re waiting to start CDT at a lymphedema clinic.

For autoimmune or chronic inflammation conditions: I recommend starting with weekly sessions for at least 3-4 weeks to assess how your body responds. It takes time and consistency to make progress with these chronic conditions, and we will work together to create a treatment plan based on your symptoms, frequency of flare-ups, and personal goals. My goal is to help you reach a maintenance state where you only come in as needed.

  • Proper preparation and self-care enhance the benefits of your lymphatic drainage treatment and support your body's healing process. We will always start each session by discussing how you felt after your last session and if we need to make any adjustments going forward.

    Before Your Session:

    Hydration

    • Drink plenty of water in the hours before your appointment.

    • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before treatment.

    What to Wear

    • Most people undress completely or to their underwear for sessions. You’ll remain covered during treatment with only one body part exposed at a time.

    • Generally, it can feel good to wear loose fitting clothing to dress in after your sessions, but any clothes are fine.

    • Compression garments will be removed for the session and I can assist with getting them back on after the session if needed.

    Eating

    • It is okay to eat before your session. Some people like to avoid heavy meals 1-2 hours before since I work on the abdomen.

    • Some people feel lightheaded on an empty stomach, so eat moderately.

    Medications

    • Continue all prescribed medications as normal.

    • If you take blood thinners, let me know (MLD is gentle but important to note).

    What to Bring

    • Post-surgical clients: Wear/bring your compression garments if you have them.

    • Lymphedema clients: Wear/bring your compression garments.

    • Water bottle and a snack for after to continue hydration and keep blood sugars stable if it’s been a while since you’ve eaten.

    After Your Session:

    Hydration

    • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. This helps your body flush the lymph fluid we've mobilized.

    • Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water in the 24 hours following treatment.

    Rest & Movement

    • Take it easy for a few hours after your session.

    • Walking is good (helps lymph flow), swimming, gentle yoga, or other low-intensity exercise is fine.

    • Avoid strenuous exercise for 12-24 hours.

    • Listen to your body.

    What You Might Experience

    • You may urinate more frequently after treatment. This is a positive sign—your body is eliminating mobilized fluid!

    • Many clients feel relaxed and slightly tired - this is normal.

    • Mild fatigue to low flu-like symptoms – Your body is working hard to process and eliminate waste.

    • Temporary increased thirst – Drink water as needed.

    • Improved mobility & lighter feeling – Reduced swelling and stiffness.

    When to Contact Me:

    Reach out if you experience:

    • Unexpected pain or discomfort.

    • Signs of infection (redness, heat, fever).

    • Unusual swelling increase.

    • Any concerns about your response to treatment.

For post-surgical clients: Always report any concerning symptoms to your surgeon.

  • Many people are surprised by how different Manual Lymphatic Drainage feels compared to traditional massage. Understanding what to expect helps you relax and receive the full benefit of your treatment.

    When You Arrive

    Check-In & Consultation

    • We'll review your health history and current condition.

    • I'll explain the treatment plan for your specific needs.

    • You'll have time to ask questions and discuss your goals.

    • For post-surgical clients, I'll review your surgeon's protocols if they have any.

    Privacy & Comfort

    • You'll change in a private treatment room.

    • Draping ensures you remain covered throughout the session.

    • Only the specific area being treated will be exposed at any time.

    • Your comfort and dignity are always priorities.

    The Treatment Experience

    Body Position

    • Most sessions are performed with you lying on your back on a comfortable treatment table.

    • We may adjust positioning based on the areas being treated.

    The Technique

    What MLD feels like:

    • Very gentle pressure – Much lighter than traditional massage.

    • Repetitive, rhythmic movements – Slow, repetitive strokes along your skin with slightly deeper pressure over areas of lymph nodes (underarms, abdomen, groin).

    • Warmth or coolness – Some people feel temperature changes as circulation improves.

    Additional techniques:

    • Deeper pressure may be implemented to work on fibrotic areas or scar tissue. These techniques are always guided by client tolerance and may feel intense but should not be painful.

What MLD does NOT feel like:

    • Deep tissue pressure.

    • Painful or uncomfortable manipulation.

    • Vigorous rubbing or kneading - these are not “lymphatic sculpting” techniques.

The lightness can be surprising! MLD works on the superficial lymphatic vessels just beneath your skin, so deep pressure isn't necessary and would actually be counterproductive.

Your comfort and safety are always the priority. MLD should never be painful—if anything feels uncomfortable, we'll adjust the technique immediately.

    After Your Session Ends

    Before you leave:

    • We'll discuss what you experienced and anything I noticed.

    • I'll explain any homework or self-care techniques.

    • We'll schedule your next appointment if you're doing a series.

    What Makes MLD Different

Many clients tell me that MLD is unlike any bodywork they've experienced. The gentleness, the rhythmic nature, and the profound relaxation create a unique therapeutic experience. While it may feel surprisingly subtle, the effects are powerful—reduced swelling, faster healing, and improved well-being.

Trust the process, relax into the treatment, and allow your body to respond to this specialized technique.

  • No, Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is not the same as the "lymphatic massage" or "body sculpting" services you may see advertised at spas and wellness centers. While these services may use similar terminology, they are quite different in technique, purpose, and outcomes.

Understanding these differences helps you choose the right treatment for your needs and set realistic expectations.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialized medical technique developed by lymphatic drainage researchers and physicians specifically to treat medical conditions affecting the lymphatic system.

    Key characteristics of authentic MLD:

    Medical Foundation

    • Based on established protocols (Vodder, Leduc, Casley-Smith).

    • Requires specialized training and certification (ACOLS, Klose, or others).

    • Requires in-depth knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.

    • Understand contraindications and medical precautions.

    • Most often used in medical settings for post-surgical recovery and lymphedema treatment.

    Specific Technique

    • Extremely gentle pressure – Much lighter than traditional massage

    • Precise, rhythmic strokes – Following specific lymphatic pathways

    • Systematic approach – Working through the body's lymphatic zones in specific order

    • Medical precision – Requires understanding of lymph node locations and drainage patterns

At Denver Lymphatic, I provide authentic MLD using established medical protocols. As a licensed Physical Therapist and Massage Therapist with specialized training in Manual Lymphatic Drainage (ACOLS), I follow evidence-based techniques developed for medical therapeutic purposes.

    What is "Lymphatic Massage"?

Many spas and wellness centers offer services called "lymphatic massage," "lymphatic drainage massage," or similar names. These services vary widely in quality and technique because the term “lymphatic massage” is not regulated. These sessions are often a combination of Swedish massage techniques with strokes in the general direction of lymphatic flow.

Important note: Some spa "lymphatic massage" services are quite good and provided by well-trained therapists. However, the quality and medical appropriateness vary significantly, and these services are generally not appropriate for medical conditions like post-surgical recovery or lymphedema. Always ask if your massage therapist has an MLD certification if you are seeking true lymphatic treatment.

What is "Body Sculpting" or "Lymphatic Body Contouring"?

Many med spas and wellness centers offer "body sculpting," "lymphatic body contouring," or "post-lipo massage" services, often marketed heavily on social media. These sessions often include vigorous manipulation of tissues using deeper pressure and different types of tools.

Important note: Some people find great benefit in these sessions with dramatic body changes. However, it is important to note, that these changes are temporary and results vary from person to person. Generally, these sessions are not appropriate for medical conditions like post-surgical recovery or lymphedema because of their vigorous nature.

    Why the Distinction Matters

For Post-Surgical Clients: Using the wrong technique after surgery can be dangerous. Firm pressure, aggressive manipulation, or improper drainage techniques can:

    • Damage healing tissues

    • Increase swelling rather than reduce it

    • Cause complications like seromas or hematomas

    • Delay your recovery or potentially harm surgical results

Your surgeon expects you to receive gentle, medically-appropriate MLD. Always verify that your therapist:

    • Is trained in authentic MLD protocols

    • Communicates with your surgeon

    • Understands post-surgical precautions

For Lymphedema Clients: Lymphedema is a serious medical condition that requires specialized treatment. "Lymphatic massage" at spas or body sculpting services are not appropriate for lymphedema management and could potentially:

    • Worsen swelling by using incorrect drainage patterns

    • Cause tissue damage with excessive pressure

    • Miss important contraindications

    • Provide false sense of treatment without managing the condition

Lymphedema requires Complete Decongestive Therapy protocols including specialized MLD techniques, compression, skin care, and exercise.

For chronic inflammation, autoimmune conditions, injury recovery, pregnancy, and therapeutic wellness Clients: Gentle MLD has great benefits by working with your body’s natural inflammation and immune system functions. Too vigorous or non-specific treatment can:

    • Worsen inflammation by irritating tissues

    • Miss important contraindications

    • Provide false sense of treatment without managing the condition

Have questions about whether a service you've seen advertised is appropriate for your needs? I'm happy to discuss your specific situation and help you understand what type of treatment is right for you.

I value your time and your commitment to your healing journey. This policy helps me provide the best possible care to all my clients while maintaining a sustainable practice. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

  • Denver Lymphatic operates as a cash-based practice, which means we do not bill insurance companies directly. However, many clients successfully receive partial or full reimbursement from their insurance for lymphatic drainage treatment.

    Why We're Cash-Based

Operating as a cash-pay practice allows me to:

    • Focus entirely on your care without insurance company limitations

    • Provide longer, more thorough sessions than insurance typically allows

    • Customize your treatment plan based on your needs, not insurance restrictions

    • Avoid session caps that might cut off your treatment before you're fully recovered

    Insurance Reimbursement: Superbills

We can provide detailed superbills (itemized receipts) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

I cannot guarantee insurance reimbursement, as coverage varies widely between insurance companies and individual plans. However, I'll provide all the documentation needed to maximize your chances of reimbursement.

    Questions to Ask Your Insurance

When calling your insurance company, ask these specific questions:

    1. "Do I have out-of-network benefits for CPT code 97140 (manual therapy) or massage therapy?"

    2. "What is my out-of-network deductible and have I met it?"

    3. "What percentage of out-of-network services do you cover?"

    4. "Do I need pre-authorization for lymphatic drainage therapy?"

    5. "What documentation do you require for reimbursement?"

    6. "Do I need a physician referral or prescription?"

Have your policy number ready and take notes during the call, including the representative's name and date.

    HSA & FSA Accounts

Manual Lymphatic Drainage typically qualifies for HSA and FSA reimbursement when it's medically necessary. I’ve had many clients use their HSA or FSA card to pay for services without any issue.

Check with your HSA/FSA administrator about their specific requirements.

    Medicare

Unfortunately, you cannot submit a superbill to Medicare for a practitioner who is not partnered with Medicare. If you have secondary insurance for out-of-network benefits, you can submit a superbill and may potentially receive reimbursement.

    Payment Options

    We accept:

    • All major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover)

    • HSA (Health Savings Account) cards

    • FSA (Flexible Spending Account) cards

If you have questions about insurance reimbursement or need additional documentation, please don't hesitate to ask.

  • No, you do not need a doctor's referral to schedule Manual Lymphatic Drainage at Denver Lymphatic. You can book an appointment directly at any time.

However, in certain situations, a referral or medical clearance is highly recommended or required for your safety and optimal results.

When a Medical Referral is Required

    If you have:

    • Active cancer or recent cancer treatment

    • Congestive heart failure or significant cardiac conditions

    • Kidney disease or renal insufficiency

    • Blood clotting disorders

    • Diabetes with complications

    • Any serious chronic health condition

A referral from your physician ensures safe, coordinated care. I want to work collaboratively with your medical team to provide the best possible treatment for your specific situation.

If anything in your health history suggests we should consult with your physician, I'll let you know. Your safety is always the priority, and I'd rather err on the side of caution.

    What if I’m Post-Surgical?

You do not need a referral for MLD if you are a post-surgical client. If you would feel more comfortable to have a referral from your physician before starting MLD treatment, I encourage you to communicate with your surgeon about them prescribing MLD. I can help you with that process if needed. I will gladly coordinate care with your surgeon if they have any post-operative protocols they would like followed. I want you and your surgeon to have the utmost confidence in your MLD treatment under my care.

I welcome communication with your care team to ensure coordinated treatment. Whether a referral is or isn't required, collaboration enhances your care and outcomes.

Have questions about whether you need medical clearance? Call or email - I'm happy to discuss your specific situation and advise whether consulting with your doctor first would be beneficial.

  • Why We Don't Display Before/After Photos

At Denver Lymphatic, you won't find dramatic before/after transformation photos on our website or social media. This is an intentional, professional decision based on medical ethics, realistic expectations, and respect for your privacy.

    Our Approach to Results Documentation

Manual Lymphatic Drainage produces real, meaningful results:

    • Reduced post-surgical swelling

    • Improved lymphedema symptoms

    • Faster healing and recovery

    • Decreased pain and discomfort

    • Better tissue quality and surgical outcomes

However, I don't market using before/after photos for several important reasons.

    1. Medical Ethics and Privacy

    Your privacy is paramount:

    • Medical treatments should respect client confidentiality

    • Your healing journey is personal, not marketing material

    • Before/after photos can feel exploitative

    2. Realistic Expectations

Before/after photos can create unrealistic expectations:

    • Dramatic "instant results" photos on social media can distort reality

    • Lighting, angles, and posing manipulate appearance

    • Immediate post-massage photos vs. hours later create false impressions

    The reality of MLD results:

    • Gradual improvement over multiple sessions, not instant transformation

    • Medical healing that continues between sessions

    • Individual variation – everyone heals differently and at different rates

    • Sustainable outcomes through consistency and healing, not dramatic overnight changes

    3. Every Body Heals Differently

Your results are unique to you:

    • Your surgical procedure and technique

    • Your body's natural healing capacity

    • Your age, health status, and genetics

    • How consistently you follow post-treatment care

    • Whether you wear compression as directed

    • Your overall health and wellness habits

One person's before/after photos don't predict your results. I want you to focus on YOUR progress, not compare yourself to others.

    How We Document YOUR Results

While I don't display before/after photos publicly, I do track your progress:

    Objective measurements:

    • Limb circumference measurements (for lymphedema)

    • Range of motion improvements

    • Pain scale changes

    • Swelling reduction over time

    • Tissue texture improvements

    Subjective assessments:

    • How you feel day-to-day

    • Your comfort and mobility changes

    • Your satisfaction with healing progress

    • Your functional improvements

Photographic documentation (for your records only):

    • With your consent, I can take photos for your medical record or to communicate with your physician

    • You keep these photos private for tracking your own progress

    • Useful for showing your surgeon your healing progression

    • Helps you see gradual changes you might not notice day-to-day

These photos are for YOUR benefit, not my marketing.

    Questions About Results?

During your consultation, I'm happy to discuss:

    • Realistic expectations for your specific situation

    • Typical timeline for improvement

    • What results you can reasonably expect

    • How we'll track your progress

    • What factors influence your outcomes

    I'll be honest about:

    • What MLD can and cannot do

    • How long your treatment series typically takes

    • Individual factors that affect your results

    • Realistic healing timelines

My goal is to set appropriate expectations so you feel informed, confident, and satisfied with your real healing progress - not disappointed because reality didn't match exaggerated promises.

Your healing matters more than my marketing. Your privacy matters more than my social media presence. Your realistic satisfaction matters more than dramatic false promises.

That's why you won't see before/after photos at Denver Lymphatic - and why you can trust the treatment you receive is medically appropriate, professionally delivered, and ethically provided.

Have questions about what results you can realistically expect? Let's discuss your specific situation during your consultation. I'm here to provide honest, professional guidance for your healing journey.
